Ferhat Mayouf – No forgiving, no forgetting!
Demonstration: Tuesday 23.07.2023 17:30 at Turmstraße underground station
On 23 July 2020, Ferhat Mayouf died of smoke inhalation in Moabit prison at the age of 36. For us it is clear: this was murder! Murder by this state and its racist institutions.
Ferhat was arrested and imprisoned on a trivial theft charge. If he had had a German passport or a safe place of residence, he would not have ended up in prison at all. From the first contact with the police, he was beaten, injured and humiliated. He was placed in solitary confinement and locked up for 23 hours a day. When he asked for medical help and support, he was denied it. On 23 July, a fire broke out in his cell at around 11pm. Ferhat screamed for help. Instead of opening the door and getting him out, the guards waited for the fire brigade to arrive. They did nothing for over twenty minutes. Twenty minutes that cost Ferhat his life. That was murder!
Ferhat was criminalised by German migration policy, mistreated by the police and killed by the isolation and failure to provide assistance in prison. We speak of murder because in a total institution like prison there can be no free decision to end one’s own life. The suicide rate in prison is more than ten times higher than in the rest of the population – despite the comprehensive surveillance. This shows that People are systematically driven to their deaths by the circumstances of their imprisonment. This violence is so commonplace that many people see it as normal. This must not be allowed to continue. We must raise our voices and fists all the louder.
We also want to take to the streets on the fourth annual commemoration of Ferhat. We will show the detainees in Moabit prison that we have not forgotten them. We will make it clear to all those responsible that we will never forgive.
Join us on the street: On 23 July 2024 at 17:30 at Turmstraße underground station!
No forgiveness, no forgetting!
